What it actually costs, against the alternatives

Indianapolis has an unusual amount of older housing that was built with a laundry space and never came with machines: the bungalows and doubles through Fountain Square, Irvington and the near east side, where the hookups are usually down in the basement, and the newer apartment stock out toward Fishers, Carmel and Avon, where they are in a closet off the hallway. Either way the room is there and the machines are not, which leaves you buying a set, driving to a laundromat, or renting one.

The laundromat number is the one that surprises people. At the 2026 national average of about $5.25 for a wash and a dry, three loads a week is roughly $68 a month and five loads is closer to $114, before you count the driving and the two hours sitting there. Renting a set is frequently cheaper than the laundromat outright, and it is always cheaper in hours.

What to check before delivery in Indianapolis

• Basement stairs are the thing to mention first. A great deal of Indianapolis laundry lives in the basement, and stairs are the one part of a delivery that has to be agreed in advance rather than discovered on the day. There is a $50 charge per flight here, and it gets settled when the delivery is booked so nobody is negotiating in a doorway with a washer on a dolly.
• Indianapolis doubles and the shared entry. The double-houses common through the older neighbourhoods often put the laundry hookups in a shared or semi-shared basement, sometimes behind a door only one unit has a key to. Sort out access before the delivery day, because an operator cannot install a set in a room he cannot get into.
• Gas or electric, and knowing which you have. Plenty of Indianapolis housing was plumbed for a gas dryer, and plenty of it has the 240 volt outlet instead. They are not interchangeable and it is the single most common reason a delivery has to be rescheduled here. Look behind where the dryer would sit: a capped gas line with a shutoff valve means gas, a large three or four prong outlet means electric. Tell the operator which one before the set is loaded.
• Where the floor drain is. Basements across Marion County take water in a wet spring, and a washer wants to sit where it can drain and where a sump is doing its job. If your hookups are on the far wall from the drain, or the sump pump is one you have been meaning to look at, that is worth raising first. It changes where the set goes, not whether you can have one.
