What it actually costs, against the alternatives

Central Florida housing almost never has a basement, so laundry ends up in one of three places: a utility closet off the kitchen, the garage, or a hookup on the back of a manufactured home. All three are common between Tampa, Lakeland and Orlando, and a great deal of that housing was built with the plumbing and sold without the machines. Add the apartments going up along the Westshore and Brandon corridors and there are a lot of people here with a laundry space and nothing in it.

The laundromat number is the one that surprises people. At the 2026 national average of about $5.25 for a wash and a dry, three loads a week is roughly $68 a month and five loads is closer to $114, before you count the driving and the two hours sitting there. Renting a set is frequently cheaper than the laundromat outright, and it is always cheaper in hours.

What to check before delivery in central Florida

• If your laundry lives in the garage, plan for the heat. This is the most Florida thing on this list and it is genuinely worth knowing. An unconditioned garage runs well over a hundred degrees in August, and heat is hard on a dryer's control board and on the rubber parts of a washer. Leave a few inches of clearance for air, keep the machines off an outside wall that takes afternoon sun if you can, and do not close a wet washer up in there. It is also a reason renting suits garage installs: when the heat does eventually kill a board, it is the operator's board.
• If you lost a set to water, renting is the fast way back. Plenty of people across Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco have replaced flooded machines in the last couple of years, and buying two appliances at once is a bill that lands all in one week. A rental gets you doing laundry at home again for a monthly figure instead, and if the water comes back the machines are not your loss to absorb. Worth putting them on a riser either way if the space has ever taken water.
• Manufactured and mobile homes: measure the door and the step. Polk County and the parks around Lakeland, Plant City and Zephyrhills have a lot of this housing, and the laundry hookup is often in a narrow utility closet reached through a doorway built to a tighter spec than a stick-built house. Measure the narrowest point, including the step up, and send the operator that number before delivery day rather than finding out with a machine on the porch.
• Short leases and seasonal stays are the clearest case for renting. Between the winter residents, travel nurses around the Tampa hospitals and students at USF and Florida Poly, a lot of people here know exactly how long they are staying and it is not long enough to justify buying. A rented set is a decision you reverse with a phone call.
