What it actually costs, against the alternatives

What to check before delivery in the Upstate

  • Back porches and unheated rear rooms. A lot of mill-village housing puts the hookups on an enclosed porch that was never insulated. It is fine most of the year and a burst-hose risk in a January cold snap. Ask the operator about freeze precautions before you commit to that spot.
  • Older 60-amp and 100-amp panels. Plenty of pre-1960 housing here has not been upgraded. An electric dryer wants a dedicated 30-amp circuit, and if the panel cannot give you one, that is an electrician's bill on top of the machine. Worth knowing before you buy anything, and a reason renting is easier: you find out at the survey, not after you have paid.
