What it actually costs, against the alternatives

New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the country, and a great deal of how people live here is the two-family and three-family house: Newark, Elizabeth, Bayonne, Union City, Jersey City, block after block of them. The hookups are almost always down in a shared basement, and very often only the owner's unit has a machine sitting on them. If you are the tenant, you have the plumbing and none of the appliance.

The laundromat number is the one that surprises people. At the 2026 national average of about $5.25 for a wash and a dry, three loads a week is roughly $68 a month and five loads is closer to $114, before you count the driving and the two hours sitting there. Renting a set is frequently cheaper than the laundromat outright, and it is always cheaper in hours.

What to check before delivery in New Jersey

• Find out whether your dryer hookup is gas or electric before anyone buys anything. This is the single most expensive mistake in New Jersey housing and it is completely avoidable. Most of this state is on gas heat, so a large share of basements have a gas line capped off behind the dryer rather than a 240 volt outlet. A gas dryer on an electric hookup, or the reverse, is not a machine you can make work. Look behind the space: a heavy round outlet with three or four slots is electric, a small yellow or black capped pipe is gas. Tell the operator which one you have.
• If your laundry is in the basement, think about water before you think about the machine. North Jersey basements take on water, and the remnants of Ida in September 2021 filled thousands of them across Essex, Union, Somerset and Middlesex in a single night. A set you bought and lost is your loss. A set you rent that gets ruined is the operator's problem to replace, which is not a small difference in this part of the state. Ask about getting it up on a pedestal or a riser either way.
• In a two-family, settle who pays for what before delivery, not after. The basement is shared, so the outlet and the water are usually on the landlord's meter or the downstairs unit's. It is a two minute conversation now and a genuinely bad one three months in. Get it in writing in a text message if nothing else.
• Rutgers turns New Brunswick and Piscataway over every August. Between the students and the twelve month leases around Middlesex County, availability tightens sharply in late summer. If you need a set for a school-year lease, ask about lead time in July rather than the week you move in.
