What it actually costs, against the alternatives

The Triangle has been taking in people faster than almost anywhere in the country, and most of what has been built for them is apartments and townhomes with laundry hookups and no machines in them. If you have just signed a lease in Raleigh, Durham or Cary, you are choosing between buying a set for somewhere you have lived three weeks, carrying baskets to a laundromat, or renting one.

The laundromat number is the one that surprises people. At the 2026 national average of about $5.25 for a wash and a dry, three loads a week is roughly $68 a month and five loads is closer to $114, before you count the driving and the two hours sitting there. Renting a set is frequently cheaper than the laundromat outright, and it is always cheaper in hours.

What to check before delivery in the Triangle

• You may not know how long you are staying. That is the honest position for a lot of people who move here for a job at RTP or the universities, and it is a better argument for renting than any price comparison. A rented set is a decision you reverse with a phone call. A bought one is something you move or sell.
• Stacked closets in new Triangle construction. A great deal of what has gone up around Cary, Morrisville and North Hills puts laundry in a narrow closet sized for a stacked unit. Measure the depth with the door shut and give the operator that number before delivery day rather than finding out with a machine on the landing.
• Older Durham and Five Points housing. Usually the opposite problem: a back room with room to spare, a step up into it, and a doorway narrower than the machine. Worth a photo to the operator first.
• Student turnover in August. Chapel Hill, Durham and North Raleigh fill fast when the universities go back. If you need a set for a school-year lease, ask about lead time in July rather than the week you move in.
