Monthly figures use 4.33 weeks, which is the real average rather than four. Add roughly $8 to $15 a month for detergent, softener and dryer sheets, which you are buying either way but which people forget when comparing.
The number that surprises people. A family of four running seven loads a week is spending somewhere near $2,000 a year at the laundromat, and has nothing at the end of it. That is more than a new washer and dryer set costs outright.

A laundromat trip is rarely under 90 minutes once you count sorting, loading the car, driving, washing, drying, folding and driving home. At two trips a week that is three to five hours, most of a working day every month, and it is time you cannot do anything else with because you cannot leave your clothes unattended.

Wear on your clothes
Commercial dryers run hotter than domestic ones. Over years, that shortens the life of what you put in them, which is a real cost even though nobody itemises it.
Why prices vary so much between laundromats
- Machine size. A 20 lb washer and a 60 lb washer are very different prices. If you are washing a comforter, the big machine is usually cheaper than three small loads.
- City versus rural. Urban laundromats pay more rent and charge accordingly.
- Card versus coin. Card systems often price in smaller increments, which tends to nudge the average up.
- Time of day. Some places discount mornings midweek. If your schedule is flexible this is free money.
Cheapest way to use a laundromat: fewer, bigger loads in the largest washer, then dry at home if you have anywhere to hang things. Drying is where laundromat costs run away from you, and it is the part you can most easily avoid.
When the laundromat is genuinely the right answer

If you do one or two loads a week, the laundromat is cheaper than any alternative by a clear margin. At $23 to $46 a month you are below the cost of renting, far below the cost of buying, and you are not maintaining anything. If you also have no hookups in your home, the decision is made for you.
It is also the right answer if you are somewhere temporarily, if you are between places, or if you genuinely do not mind the trip. Plenty of people use the time to read and would rather not have a machine to think about.
Where it stops making sense
The break-even lands at around three loads a week. Above that, the laundromat starts costing more per month than renting a set that gets delivered, installed and repaired for you, and the gap widens quickly.
